David FeBland

January 20th, 2010

I love moments in life when I am reminded of the transformative power of light.  Usually these moments come when I stumble around a corner to find that a familiar street is suddenly bathed in the light of the setting  sun, or I wake up and look out the window to see the neighbourhood is filled with reflected light from a blanket of new snow. This time around it is the work of David FeBland that has reminded me just how beautiful the world can be when seen in a new light.

Jenny Scobel

January 19th, 2010

Culling together imagery from many sources, and blending multiple mediums together in a single work can be a dangerous practice in the wrong hands, but in Jenny Scobel’s hands the results are stunning and powerful works of art.

Julian Lee

January 18th, 2010

Julian Lee did something very nice for me this weekend; he introduced me to his work.  I am particularly interested with the way Lee layers his imagery to create surreal depictions of modern landscapes that strike me both with a sense of the familiar and the foreign, resulting in a complex balancing act that keeps me coming back for more.

Katharine Harvey

We Have a Winner!

January 11th, 2010

Congratulations to Deborah, winner of the “Favourite PaintBlog Artist” giveaway!

While it was never my intention to declare a “winner” among the artists I do believe it only fair to give kudos to Tiina Heiska (whose painting sits atop this post) for being named on three different occasions as a reader favourite. Four other painters were singled out more than once; Mary Jane Ansell, Yury Darashkevich, Terry Miura, and Eric Zener (paintings by each artist to be found below the fold, in alphabetical order.)

Thank you to everyone who participated, it’s been a great opportunity for me to reflect back on these past two years and remember just how many amazingly talented artists are crawling over this old globe of ours, creating incredible works of art.

Paul Ferney

January 8th, 2010

It’s not an easy trick to pull off, but Paul Ferney manages to capture the subtle and complex range of hues and tones of nature on a recurring basis. My day just got a little brighter.

Note: Today is the last day to cast a vote for your favourite artist from the archives and be entered into the first ever PaintBlog giveaway. The winner will be announced next week, good luck!

Maryam Foroozanfar

January 7th, 2010

It’s a case of quality over quantity over on Maryam Foroozanfar’s site, though, given the vast number of hours that must go into these incredible portraits you could make an argument for quantity as well.
