Do you remember the scene in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” where Jim Carrey is frantically running around inside his mind trying to salvage his memories as a team scrambles to erase them from his bedside? That intense sense of witnessing your memories evaporate right in front of you has been captured by artist Miquel Wert.  His haunting paintings feature blurred figures in snapshot moments; fragments of the past caught in a suspended state of hazy, diminished memory, and I am a big fan.

The first thing I thought of was Alzheimer’s. My mother suffered from it, and, even though she couldn’t verbalize what she was going through, I think it must have been something akin to what is depicted in these pieces. I am very moved by them, for that reason.

Thank you for introducing your readers to yet another wonderful artist. I never tire of your blog.

I agree with you, and in that way there is something a bit frightening about his work, but also touching.

I’m very sorry to hear about your mother, my father worked at a long-term care hospital for many years where many of the patients suffered from Alzheimers, and it always seemed like a very scary disease to me, even as a very young child.

Thank you, Eric. I hold a very special place in my heart for people who work and volunteer in long-term care hospitals/residences; my mum spent the last year and-a-half of her life in one, and the staff was wonderful – they were so caring, at all times, and made a frightening disease easier to deal with (for both my mum and her family). I went to a service a couple of weeks ago for those residents who passed away over the last 4 months; it was beautiful.
