Heather Nevay

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

I’m not going to say they don’t disturb me a bit, but that’s partly why I like Heather Nevay’s paintings.  Her attention to detail and storytelling abilities don’t hurt either.

Amanda Besl

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Amanda Besl takes mainstream images of young women (the kind you find in any/every magazine selling you anything/everything) and brings them into the world of traditional oil painting.  The results are pretty amazing.

Todd Karam

Friday, May 9th, 2008

The previously posted about Todd Karam has a show opening tonight at Suite 100 Gallery.  If, like me, you’re not going to be in the Seattle area tonight, you might do well to see the new works on Todd Karam’s blog instead.

Amy Sol

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Having just returned from Sin City it seems only appropriate to post about Las Vegas-based artist Amy Sol.  Amy is busy creating a Manga-inspired fantasy world in her paintings, populated by bizarre creatures and lanky girls.  Come to think of it, I could say the same of Vegas.

Chris Crites

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Chris Crites paints exclusively on paper bags. Less exclusively, he paints incredible mug shots derived from found photographs, most of which pre-date the 1950′s, according to his website.  Trust me on this one and go to his site.  Great great work.

Colette Calascione

Monday, May 5th, 2008

I very much like the way traditional subject matter is mixed with the surreal in Colette Calascione’s work.

Dennis Hayes

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Dennis Hayes paints birds.  Now, I’ve never been all that fascinated by birds visually.  They’re ok and all, but I’m not going to squat in the bush for a week hoping to see one.  I might, however, be willing to squat in the bush for a week to see one of the bird paintings by Dennis Hayes.  Luckily, I don’t have to, I can just go here instead.

Chris Langstroth

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Chris Langstroth’s quick brushstrokes/knifestrokes serve him well.  There is great energy in his work, and his style is equally effective at depicting landscapes and portraiture.  There is also no shortage of work to see so you could be on his site for a while.

Bonnie Lewis

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

I really like all of Bonnie Lewis’ paintings, but I’m particularly fond of her series “Nasty Girls”.  I’ll include a link to her site here, because if you try to google “nasty girls” you might wind up with rather different results.  Just a guess really.

David Lyle

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

There was a period a few years ago when I would visit thrift stores, flea markets and garage sales looking for old photographs that I would then paste into my paintings.  David Lyle has taken this idea one step further; he uses found photos from the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s as the subject for his large oil paintings.  His painting technique is strong, but his curatorial skills are even stronger as the images he chooses are incredible.
